Johnson starts again with pop tab collecting
Published 11:14am Monday, October 3, 2011Daryl Johnson of Fergus Falls is ready to collect additional pop tabs for a worthy cause, the Ronald McDonald House. He just cashed in for $1,124 after delivering close to four million tabs to a recycling center in Fargo.
“The center said we had 1,813 pounds of tabs,” said Johnson. “We had previously estimated close to three million tabs, but it turned out to be closer to four million when all was said and done.”
What matters most to Johnson is that he’ll be able to present a check to the Ronald McDonald Foundation. The presentation will take place Saturday, Dec. 10, during the Local Ranchers and Cowboys Christmas celebration in the town of Flom, southwest of Mahnomen.
Johnson and his siblings were raised in Beltrami and Ada, where their father worked as a machinist. Each year family members gather for the Local Ranchers and Cowboys Christmas celebration in the nearby town of Flom.
“I’m ready to start the collecting process all over again,” said Johnson, whose previous effort spanned close to 20 years. “Helping families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Fargo and at other locations is a big incentive for me.”
Johnson is an RTC retiree who is learning new skills at PioneerHome under the Experience Works Program. People can drop off tabs at his home along West Linden Street but should first call him at 739-3569.
