Practice ice ready Oct. 31 [UPDATED]
Published 9:54am Tuesday, October 11, 2011 Updated 11:55am Tuesday, October 11, 2011With the fall sports season winding down, and anticipation of the winter season coming up, the Fergus Falls school board asked for information about the timetable for completion of the community ice arena.
“The practice arena completion was anticipated as Oct. 24, but that may be a little soon. However, varsity girls should be able to use the facility when practice begins on Monday, Oct. 31,” said Business Manager Mark Masten during Monday’s school board meeting.
He said the main arena should be available for hockey games by Nov. 15, even if some work remains to be done.
The Fergus Falls Port Authority built the community ice arena, the city manages the facility and School District 544 has a lease and other agreements in order to use the new buildings.
Earlier this month the port authority and city council completed the final stage of the community ice arena bonding process. Authorized was the sale of $6.58 million in bonds to United Bankers’ Bank in Bloomington.
The sales tax to pay for the community ice arena will begin Jan. 1, 2012.
The one-half percent city tax will increase the sales tax to 7.375 from 6.875 percent on all goods purchased within Fergus Falls city limits. The tax will not be imposed on items such as food, clothing and prescription medicine.
There also will not be an additional tax on vehicles.
The city will pay off the bonds using the sales tax and further donations coming in from the fundraising committee.
