Comets outlast Tigers in 5-set battle
Published 9:59am Wednesday, October 19, 2011ROTHSAY — In a thrilling five set battle, the Hillcrest Comets were able to edge the Rothsay Tigers 3-2 (23-25, 25-12, 16-25, 26-24, 15-11) in a Little Eight Conference showdown Tuesday night.
The Tigers were able to squeak out the first set by two points, but saw the Comets roar back into the picture with a dominant second set. It became a seesaw battle between the two teams as they traded the next two sets, setting up for the fifth and final set.
“At the beginning of the 5th game I paused told the girls I really didn’t care who won or lost because I was very proud of how well they were playing tonight,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Laura Skaret.
The Comets were able to muster up enough energy to pick up a much needed road win in the final set.
“My goal for the girls all season has been to be very aggressive with their attacking even if they don’t get the “perfect set.” I think they did that tonight,” added Skaret.
The Comets’ Brittany Christenson had an all-around good game racking in nine kills, eight digs, a block and went 25-for-25 with six aces from the service line. Teammate Laura Tungseth was also deadly from service as she had nine aces in the match.
The Comets finish out their regular season and will look to see where they will be seeded in the Section 6A playoffs, while Rothsay will travel to Underwood Thursday morning for the Rockets end of the year tournament at 9 a.m.
