Heating a passion for Detienne

As a boy, whenever Glen Detienne saw a utility truck, he thought to himself, “That’s what I want to be: one of those guys.”

“I always thought it would be a great job where you aren’t stuck in a office and you get to drive around the beautiful country and meet all different people,” he said.

Detienne said he loved working on and fixing different things growing up. So his decision to become a heating and cooling technician was a easy one. After his schooling he began working at Ugstad Plumbing and Heating. Detienne has been with the company for 22 years now.

“I really love my job and the freedom I have with it,” he said. “It’s great. I get to meet so many people.”

Detienne said his customers become like family to him. He even receives Christmas cards, wine and other gifts for the holidays. “One lady calls me every year on my birthday,” he said. “Now that’s special.”

Granted, Detienne said, his job isn’t all fun. He has had some interesting encounters while on the job site servicing furnaces.

He remembers the time 10 years ago when he had parasites in his intestinal tract, likely caused when he put his mouth on pipes to unclog condensation lines. “I couldn’t do my normal service calls because I had to stay close to a bathroom,” he said. “Now looking back, it was my own fault and was kind of funny.”

Challenging jobs aside, Detienne says his job has been enjoyable.

“In all seriousness I really do love my job,” he said. “I look forward to many more experiences, good and bad, doing what I love.”
