In honor of my almost-5 month old granddaughter’s first Minnesota visit, I decided to make monkey cupcakes. My husband pointed out that Elliana is not old enough to eat the monkey cupcakes, but after reminding him of her monkey-themed nursery, I felt justified.

Monkey Cupcakes

I do have to admit that the idea is not original. My co-worker, Kim, was “monkeying around” online while researching an ad and came across a photo that I tried to emulate as close as possible.
In my haste, there was plenty of cheating involved. The cupcakes are from a box and the icing is from cans. I used chocolate for the base frosting, then mixed cream cheese and chocolate for the lighter brown.
Features included Junior Mints (halved) for ears, miniature marshmallows for the eyes. Mouth, nose and eyeballs were drawn with Betty Crocker food gels. The forehead hair was applied with a toothpick.
I’ll send pictures home to San Diego with Elli and am confident when she’s big enough, she’ll request that we make them together!
