Elizabeth “Betty” Mary (Braun) Nelson, 93
Published 11:41am Wednesday, November 2, 2011Elizabeth Nelson, died Oct. 30, 2011, with her family at her side under the care of hospice and the staff of the St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge.
Betty, daughter of William J. and Dorothy (Carr) Braun was born Sept. 24, 1918, in Breckenridge. She graduated from Wahpeton High School and attended North Dakota State School of Science.
She married Sherman Nelson of Breckenridge on April 1, 1942.
During her early years she was a drum major and a gymnast. She was a gymnastics grand prize winner
at the World’s Fair in Chicago. After attending Science School she worked in a dental office, the Richland County Court House, and later as a bookkeeper for Braun’s Super Service in Wahpeton.
Betty’s cooking was sought after by her extended family, especially her candy making; fudge, toffee, and divinity. People loved her fabulous pie crusts and pies. She generously gave away her sweet delicacies.
Most of all, Betty cared for her husband for many years after he suffered a stroke 1965, and until he passed away in 1994.
She was a wonderful woman who gave to her family. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sherman; brothers, Evans, Matt, John and William; and grandson, Sherman James Nelson.
Survivors include her sons, Sherman (Mary Green) of Jacobson, and their children Leif, Christopher, Michelle and Julie; William, of Breckenridge and his children, Todd and Corrine; Michael (Barbara Hooge) of Breckenridge, and their children Jennifer, Troy, and Sara; Maureen (John) Foley of Rochert, and their children Erin, Nathan, and Tara; Kathryn (Rick) Dean of Fergus Falls, and their children Cameron, Casey, and Caylie; 13 great-grandchildren, Stephanie Nelson, Kaitlyn and Bailey Nelson, Logan and Drew Devereaux, Alexandra and Jack Boucher, Jade and Levi Biewer, William and Isaac Hasbargen, and Kyra and Sam Miller; her sister, Theresa Thompson; and her brother, Thomas Braun.
Visitation: Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., with a Rosary at 7 p.m., at the funeral home
Service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Breckenridge
