Henning working on vets memorial [UPDATED]
Published 9:55am Friday, November 11, 2011 Updated 11:56am Friday, November 11, 2011Much work remains following the move of the Henning Veterans Monument to a new memorial site, with more land, along Highway 108. The new name will be Henning Military Memorial Park.
Boy Scouts plan to construct a rock bed around the flag poles. The scouts already have planted six trees at the new site and will plant more trees in the spring of 2012.
In place is a five-person board of directors who are in charge of Henning Military Memorial Park. The group is now turning its attention to raising funds with the sale of landscaping stones.
The goal is to have the first group of stones in place prior to Memorial Day 2012. Remaining stones will be positioned as they are purchased.
There are two different stones available for purchase. One is 6-by-12 inches and the other is 12-by-12 inches. Names of living and deceased veterans will be accepted.
An anonymous donor has pledged to match funds two-for-one, up to $6,000, for all money donated to the new park. This excludes purchase of stones. Donations made to the park are tax deductible and can be deposited in an account at First National Bank, Henning. Checks can be made out to Henning Military Memorial Park.
Ideas for the new park can be discussed with board members today (Friday) at Landmark Center, following the Veterans Day Program. The gathering will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
