Cramped quarters is no longer the case for Henning Police Chief Michael Helle and members of his department. They’re happy with the move from a building across the street from the old city hall into quarters formerly occupied by city staff. City staff moved to offices on the south side of town.
“We now have an evidence processing room, something that wasn’t available in the old police headquarters,” said Helle. “A place to have proper evidence processing is of critical importance to our police department.”
There are many other advantages and enhancements through the move. Among them are more space for technical work that requires computerization, a better environment for full-time police officer Justin Lohse and five part-time officers.
The police and fire departments now share a training room at the old city hall building. Sharing in this way saves money for Henning taxpayers.
The front room, near the entrance to the building, is shared with the fire department for interviews (questioning when conducting legal business). That room also is used by various agencies that come to Henning to be available to residents on a periodic basis. These include county human services, veterans services and public health, to name a few.
The move of the police department from the old quarters made room for the Henning Food Shelf to expand its services.
The new city hall (remodeled and expanded Johnson building) is located a block south of the old city hall. The fire department stayed in its current location, adjacent to the old city hall, but now has more space since the ambulance service now is located in the new city hall complex.
“Moving the ambulances to the Johnson building is good for everyone, including city and area residents,” said Fire Chief John Thalmann. “With the ambulance services now at the new city hall, our fire department has gained two additional storage spaces.”
