Published 10:53am Tuesday, December 6, 2011

The past weekend saw 12 teams participate at the Community Arena in a two-day tournament. Teams from Brookings SD, Elk River, Grand Forks, Monticello, Northfield, Detroit Lakes, Prior Lake/Savage, Fargo, Sauk Rapids, Greenway, Bemidji, and Fergus Falls participated in the tournament, filling the hotels, restaurants, and the ice arena.

The Innova Industries Pee Wee B team brought home the second place trophy in pool 1 and 2 bracket. Innova’s early morning game saw Fergus playing Sauk Rapids. After a scoreless first period the Sauk Rapids team put the first goal of the tournament on the board. Innova tied the score with 1:22 remaining in the period when Jared Kuehl fed Jacob Brimhall in front of the net and Brimhall slammed it home. The game continued tied until with 2:01 to go in the game and playing short handed, Nate Longtin stole the puck at mid ice and went back hand to put Innova up 2-1 and secure a win. Drew Luhning was outstanding in goal, stopping 23 shots including one that was a game saver in the 3rd period. The second game was against the Brookings SD Rangers. Brookings struck first just :25 into the game to take the lead. That lead was short-lived when Longtin picked off a pass and went top shelf to tie the game.

Innova PWB’s dominated the balance of the game scoring two more in the 1st. Kuehl went top shelf with assist to Longtin and Brimhall. Damon Jones slammed one past the goalie next with assist to Tom Mattson and Hunter Eldien. In the second Fergus added 4 more goals the first coming from Brimhall with assist to Longtin, second Longtin unassisted, third came from Tucker Swiontek on a hard shot with assist to Aaron Shelstad and Jack Bergren, and the forth Kuehl notched his second goal of the night with assist to Joe McKeever. Brookings scored twice in the third before Brimhall notched his second goal of the game with an assist to Longtin.

Solid defense from McKeever, Nathan Zierden, Bryce McGary, Tucker Patrick, Saxon Enders, and Cole Mahler helped Luhning, who was again solid in goal stopping 8 shots.

Innova’s PWB’s came away with an 8 – 3 win. Innova’s PWB’s third game, playing for first place in the Pool 1 & 2 bracket, was against a tough, and 4th ranked PWB team in the state, Prior Lake/Savage team. Prior Lake scored 11 goals in the game. Innova’s lone goal came from Longtin with the assist to Brimhall. Luhning was outstanding in goal, stopping 56 shots. Prior Lake/Savage went on to win the tournament. The Innova Industries team is coached by Derek Kinder and Lucas Gervais.

The Innova Industries Pee Wee B team would like to Thank the City Employees at the rink, Pam Muxfeldt and the Concession Crew, the parents who all had to work the games at the tournament, and our sponsor Jeff and Dick Young at Innova Industries.
