Herbert celebrates 34 years with FF Public Library [UPDATED]

Assistant Director and Reference Librarian Candy Herbert is retiring after completing 34 years of service with the Fergus Falls Public Library. You’re invited to help her celebrate during an open house retirement party on Thursday, Dec. 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the library’s Jean Dahling meeting room. Cake and refreshments will be served. We would especially love to hear from and see library patrons Candy has helped throughout the years at the party.

Throughout the past week, as we have had signs posted in the library informing patrons about Candy’s retirement and party, and we have been hearing from some of those grateful patrons. Many were saddened to hear of her impending retirement, as they have come

to rely on her expertise and information seeking skills throughout the years. We, too, will miss having Candy on our team; although, we wish her a fun-filled and relaxing retirement. After all, she’s earned it.

During Candy’s tenure with the library, she participated in the move from the “old Carnegie library” on Union Avenue to the “new library” on Hampden, the transition from the “card catalog” to the “OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog)” and effectively navigated all the changes in between. But this is not a eulogy. I know that Candy will

continue to serve her community and be involved in the world of books and information in retirement. We wish her all the best and hope that you will also be able to come out and wish her well on Dec. 29.

I knew I wanted to invite everyone to Candy’s party and acknowledge her retirement in this week’s column and, as I began to think back on her 34 years of service, it seemed natural to also think ahead to the next 34 years at the library. Well, maybe not that far ahead.

Next week, I will look back on the library in 2011. I’ll take a moment to reflect on our accomplishments and also what I’ve learned in my first year as Director. Then, the following week, I’ll look ahead to 2012 and share some of the library’s resolutions for the New Year.

From all of us at the library, we wish you a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. As a reminder, the library will be closed Saturday, Dec. 24 and Monday, December 26 in honor of the Christmas holiday. Also, the library will be open New Year’s Eve, Saturday, Dec. 31, but will be closed Monday, Jan. 2.

See you at the library.

Erin Smith is Library Director at the Fergus Falls Public Library.
