Madelyn Miles, 91, formerly of Barrett

Madelyn Miles, died Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at Alton Home in St. Paul.

Madelyn was born on May 9, 1920, in Morton, Minnesota, to Fred and Katie (Smith) Potzler. She was baptized into the Christian faith and confirmed on May 11, 1933. She attended school in Morgan and graduated in 1936. She attended the Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato for two years and completed her four-year degree in education at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana.

On June 12, 1945, Madelyn was married to Robert Miles, and the couple made their home on a farm west of Barrett. In the mid-1970’s they started Miles Tiling. Throughout those years, Madelyn taught school in Sauk Rapids, Barrett, and Evansville-Brandon. She and Bob enjoyed traveling the world and especially enjoyed their fishing trips in Canada. Bob passed away in April 1985.

Madelyn was active in local and state level politics. She loved music, classical music in particular, and was the organist at Zion Lutheran Church in Barrett and then at Christ Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake for many years. She also enjoyed gardening, and spending time with her family and her grandchildren. Madelyn lived on the farm until 2005, when she moved to the Serenity Home in St. Paul.

She is survived by her children Sharon Clark of Anchorage, Alaska, Colleen Mace of Lakeville, Minnesota, Maureen Adams of Brainerd, and Mark (Sharyn) Miles of Woodbury; ten grandchildren: Tony, Trudy, Travis, Gretchen, Katie, Jamie, Heather, Erin, Matthew, and Tristan; and ten great-grandchildren: Brent, Autumn, Emelia, Caleb, Zachary, Caden, Owen, Marquell, Marshawn, and Charlie.

Madelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert, grandson Tory Mace (January 1978), and her brother, Lloyd Potzler.

Visitation: one hour before the service at the church

Funeral: 1 pm on Friday, Dec. 23 at Christ Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake with the

Interment: Union Cemetery, Elbow Lake
