County Board OKs two area lake projects [UPDATED]

The Otter Tail County Board on Tuesday approved two conditional use permits at West Battle Lake and Otter Tail Lake, denied a third application and tabled another proposal.

The board followed the recommendation of the county planning commission.

Approved, with conditions, was a preliminary plat of Freye’s Beauty Beach, West Battle Lake (Girard Township) for three lots. The conditional use permit is tied to compliance with setback requirements, which will include moving a garage about eight feet farther from the lake.

The application came from J. Elaine Kienitz.

The latter directive, moving the garage only a few feet in order to meet setback provisions, seemed too stringent for commissioners Lee Rogness and chairman John Lindquist. They voted no. Voting yes were commissioners Roger Froemming, Doug Huebsch and Wayne Johnson.

“Their garage has been at this location for close to 40 years,” said Rogness. “Why force them to move the structure at this time?”

Also approved by the county board was a proposal to build a new deck at a dwelling on Otter Tail Lake in Otter Tail Township. The application came for Greenwood Lake Aire Villas, Calvin and Lynette Lunemann.

Denied by the county board was an application for a sand and gravel access road at Long Lake in Hobart Township, near Vergas. The owner will work with the county’s Land and Resource Office regarding work along bluff side and non-bluff areas near the lake.

Tabled was a proposal for culvert work near Ten Mile Lake in Tumuli Township, near Dalton. Before approval, a study must be made for use of hydraulics and impacts on Ten Mile Lake. The application comes from Dalton Association LLP, John E. Fullerton.
