Donations coming in for vets memorial [UPDATED]
Published 9:22am Monday, December 26, 2011 Updated 11:23am Monday, December 26, 2011Over $31,000 has been raised for a memorial to honor military veterans in front of the Grant County Courthouse in Elbow Lake. The memorial will cost about $50,000.
Much of the money has been raised through the selling of memorial bricks, with engraving to include the names of veterans and military service information. Over $8,000 has been raised through various donations.
Planning committee members say the holidays are a great time to contribute. No tax money is being requested for the project. The memorial will be financed entirely through veterans, their organizations and the general public.
Committee members include Clint Grove and Stu Anderson, Elbow Lake; Mark Bratvold, Ashby; Roy Randall and Wes Moir, Wendell; and Jeff Lang, Bob Shervey, Darrell Frykman and Byron Gilbertson who represent Barrett, Hoffman and Norcross.
“When you or your loved one signed up for service to our country, there was no way of knowing how that service would end,” said Grove. “It has been written that a veteran is one who once signed a blank check payable to the United States of America.”
Contact a committee member if you want to purchase a brick or make a donation.
