Pizza Braid [UPDATED]

My girls love pizza; and I get tired of it quickly.  My daughter thought it might be fun to try this Pizza Braid just to mix it up a bit.  It was fun and easy to make.  Next time, I will give everyone their own section of the dough and let them put their own selection of ingredients inside and braid their own section.  I like lots of vegetables and everyone else likes the meat!  Individual sections means that everyone can pick their own favorite ingredients and it gets everyone involved in making dinner!

Pizza Braid

Serves 4

 Ingredients:

1 package refrigerated pizza dough

1 jar pizza sauce

2 cups grated cheese (cheddar or Colby jack or pizza cheese blend)

Pizza ingredients of your choice – ground beef, pepperoni, olives, onions, sausage, peppers, etc.

1 egg beat with 1 tbls of water

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

On a cutting board lightly floured; roll out the pizza dough into a rectangle, with even sides, to the crust depth of your liking.  Move the rectangle to a baking sheet covered in parchment paper.

Using a sharp knife, lightly score the dough into three sections running the length of the rectangle, so you have a grid to guide you.  Then on each side, cut dough into ¾-1 inch sections to the middle section.

On the uncut middle section; place your desired amount of pizza sauce; then the toppings of your choice, and top with the cheese.

Starting on one end; pick up the first cut section and pull over the toppings; then the other side over that section until you have all toppings covered with a braid of dough.  I found that when I got to the other end; I didn’t need the sections; and cut them and put around the end where I started to cover the ingredients completely.

Using the beat egg and water; brush the egg over the top of the braid.

Put in oven and bake for 12-15 minutes until the pasty is browned.  Remove and cut into pieces for serving.
