A Monticello man, 45-year-old Michael Traen, escaped injury after his four-wheeler went through the ice at Norway Lake, north of Underwood.

The accident took place about 7 a.m. Christmas Day.

Traen told members of the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department that he was traveling in the four-wheeler from his fish house back to shore, when he entered open water.

He said he was unable to clearly see the open water due to darkness.

The victim was able to pull himself from the water onto the ice and made it back to shore without injury. The sheriff’s department was called at 7:37 a.m.

The open water was located a few hundred yards out on the lake, from the public access on the east side of Norway Lake.
