20 fail to nab Curly near M State campus [UPDATED]

The owner of Curly the Nativity goat said the key to catching the goat is to corner it, not chase it.

“That goat is fast, quick and smart,” Jim Aakre said Thursday morning. “If you chase it, you’re going to make it more scared.”

Aakre expressed his concerns after as many as 20 people unsuccessfully chased the goat north of M State around 4 p.m. Wednesday. The goat has been on the loose for 12 days since slipping its leash before Bethlehem Lutheran Church’s Christmas Eve Nativity scene.

There currently is a $125 reward out for the goat, who has been spotted in various locations in Fergus Falls. Curly appeared to head north after eluding her throng of pursuers Wednesday, and Aakre said he heard she’d been seen near the Fergus Falls Trap Club.

Aakre believes Curly would be safer if she stayed in town.

“My concern is that she will get cut, because there’s a lot of rough ground out there,” he said. “There also are a lot of coyotes.”

To the “bounty hunters” looking for Curly, Aakre’s advice would be to calmly corner the goat and then call the police department. They will then call Aakre to retrieve her.

Before her M State escapades, Curly was spotted earlier that day near Quality Toyota, running north. One other witness believes the goat may have gotten as far as Excel Plastics – very nearly the edge of town.

Prior to Wednesday’s movement, Curly was believed to be sticking close to the Otter Tail River, possibly by the old dairy plant.

The Journal continues to track the goat’s progress on an interactive map, available here.
