The Fergus Falls School District is inviting the public to participate in a newly formed Outdoor Facility Task Force. The purpose of the task force is to review proposed improvements to our outdoor facilities in order to provide a safe environment for our players and fans. The main focus of the task force will be the development of sites at Kennedy, Roosevelt and Cleveland schools.

The task force meetings are scheduled in the cafeteria at the Kennedy Secondary School from 5-6:30 p.m. on the following Wednesdays: Jan. 18, Jan. 25, Feb. 1 and Feb. 8. Feb. 15 will be used as an optional makeup date. Please park in the Friberg Parking Lot 5, walk up the concrete steps and enter through the main cafeteria doors.

Some of the areas of discussion will include the football stadium and field, green space for physical education, practices and games, softball fields, sprinkler system for green areas, tennis courts, and track.

K12, Inc.

iQ Academy Minnesota — the Fergus Falls School District’s online school serving grades 6-12 — was purchased by K12, Inc. in May 2010. Recently, a team of district administrators traveled to K12’s headquarters to meet and plan for the future of our online school.

Our team met with Ron Packard, the CEO and founder of the K12, Inc. organization 11 years ago. We also met with regional managers and vice presidents in charge of curriculum, marketing and finance.

We were very impressed with their mission of providing students with a diverse option to their education, and their research and analysis completed in order to improve the delivery of service.

There are many focuses and types of online schools. In our online (virtual) school, the teachers teach live each week to the students via audio and demonstrations on the computer screen.

Students are given assignments to complete and hand in through the software program and email.

These students are paced and graded on the same schedule as our students in the Kennedy and Roosevelt schools.

One of the possible future additions to our online school would be a grade K-5 option. In this option, the learning coach or parent would play a vital role in the education of their child. The teacher and learning coach would work together on the student’s lessons and progress.

Final concert

Jim Iverson will be retiring from teaching on Jan. 31, 2012. The last Fergus Falls High School concert directed by Mr. Iverson is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 26.

The concert was originally scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 25.

Over the next few weeks, staff, student and parents will have opportunities to recognize and thank Mr. Iverson for his excellence in education and dedication to the Fergus Falls Public Schools.
