PR Good Sam converting to assisted living [UPDATED]
Published 9:41am Friday, January 20, 2012 Updated 11:41am Friday, January 20, 2012On March 14, Good Samaritan Society of Pelican Rapids will convert to assisted living. The center will cease providing current skilled care services. The new center name will be Good Samaritan Society – Pelican Rapids Senior Living.
This change, according to management, will offer another care option to the seniors of the Pelican Rapids area. As a skilled nursing provider, the Good Samaritan Society – Pelican Rapids operated under a medical model of care delivery and had a nurse on duty 24 hours per day, along with certified nursing assistants and other interdisciplinary staff.
As a provider of assisted living services, the center will shift to a residential model that will have on-site professional nursing staff offered on a more limited basis 24 hours a day. The primary caregiving duties will be performed by workers who, in addition to performing some nursing assistant tasks, also will assist with activities, meal service and other duties.
As an assisted living facility, Good Samaritan Society – Pelican Rapids Senior Living will be licensed by the state of Minnesota as a provider of housing with services, as well as a class F home care services provider. It will continue to provide three meals a day, housekeeping and laundry services, as well as activities and spiritual ministry programs.
Residents who medically qualify for assisted living care do not always require the level of healthcare provided in a skilled nursing facility. Also, not all current skilled nursing residents will be able to qualify to live in an assisted living setting because of possible acute healthcare needs.
Staff members will meet with residents individually who are interested in the assisted living program that will be available. An assessment will need to be completed on each potential resident to determine whether that person’s needs can be met in this new setting.
If it is determined that a resident’s needs cannot be met in assisted living, the resident will need to relocate to another care setting. Good Samaritan Society staff members will assist the resident and family with this transition.
