Honor Society students inducted [UPDATED]

On Monday Jan. 16, the Fergus Falls High School held its induction ceremony for this year’s inductees into the National Honor Society.

The program was led by the student officers, under the direction of advisor Elizabeth Abrahams.

This year’s officers are President Ryan Sorkness, Vice President Ben Ronning, Secretary Andrew Eerdmans, and Historian Megan Fritz. The program included a candle lighting ceremony, where a candle was lit to signify the values of being a NHS member –— knowledge, scholarship, character, leadership and service.

Each inductee recited the following pledge: I pledge myself to uphold the high purpose of the National Honor Society to which I have been selected.

I will be true to the principles for which it stands; I will be loyal to my school; and will maintain and encourage high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

The pledge was followed by a wonderful musical performance by Sarah Bowman, Taylor Johnson, Delany Schara and Lexi Wedll.

Mr. Jim Iverson was the guest speaker for the event. He encouraged students to be more than ordinary — to be extraordinary by being organized, making themselves marketable, and finding a career that pursues their passion.

The 2012 Inductees include: Erin Aadland, Megan Adam, Elise Anderson, Rachel Appert, Amber Blondeau, Kimberly Bosworth, Cody Breen, Kaitlin Capouch, Cody Danielson, Nicole Ellingson, Nadia Fischer-Danzeisen, Tessa Haggstrom, Austin Hanson, Emily Hexum, Callie Ann Hoffbeck, Joshua Johnson, Taylor Johnson, Abigail Kiefer, Sadie Knudson, Rachael Melby, Hannah Nelson, Kaitlyn Neville, Megan Niblock, Taylor Olson, Nicholas Plaza, Timothy Rasmussen, Austin Sandmeyer, Samuel Steen, Samantha Velde, Keianna Vogel, Taylor West, Alyssa White, and Madison Wolters.

Band concert

Please join us for the high school band concert at the Kennedy Secondary auditorium scheduled at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 26. Please note the change in date from Wednesday, Jan. 25.

This is a historic concert because it is the last concert that band instructor Jim Iverson will direct for the Fergus Falls Public Schools.

Since many parents and community members will want to pay their respects to Mr. Iverson for his many years of dedicated service and excellence, I anticipate a large crowd that evening. This event will also be televised live by Park Region/Ottertail Telcom.

Outdoor Facility

Task Force

The first Outdoor Facility Task Force was held on Wednesday, Jan. 18 in the Kennedy Secondary School. The purpose of the task force was to get community input on improvements needed to our outdoor facilities at Kennedy, Roosevelt and Cleveland.

Twenty-five people, including community members and staff participated in the meeting. The meeting started out with an overview of the purpose and process that would be used to determine the project.

To gather information, each activity shared their ideal scenario with the group. Tennis, soccer, football, track, softball, practice baseball fields, physical education, along with using the wetland for science were all discussed.

The overriding theme for the night was providing safe practice and game fields for players. In dry seasons, like this past fall, a sprinkler system is needed to keep fields from getting too hard and dry. In wet seasons, proper drainage is needed so fields will dry out without damage and are usable in a short period of time.

Developing additional green space for practice and physical education is a high priority, as is a safe football bleacher system for the fans.

Everyone is welcome to join us for the next meeting scheduled at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25 in the cafeteria at Kennedy Secondary School. Please park in the Friberg Staff Parking Lot 5 for the easiest access to the cafeteria.
