Published 11:03am Wednesday, February 1, 2012 Updated 3:14pm Thursday, February 2, 2012A 31-year-old Fergus Falls man arrested last week in Beltrami County was charged Friday in Otter Tail County Court for assaulting a woman who he has a child with.
Local police had been looking for Kevin John Ehrich since Jan. 20, when the alleged assault occurred. He is currently being held in the Beltrami County Jail for alleged offenses there, but police have placed a hold on him.
Ehrich was charged with second degree assault and felony domestic assault. Police learned of the alleged assault around 5:15 p.m. on Jan. 20, when they received a call about the incident on the 400 block of West Fir Avenue.
Ehrich and his girlfriend began arguing in the home they shared on the 400 block of West Fir Avenue, court records state. Eventually, Ehrich began preparing to leave in the car the two shared, but when the woman tried to unlock the car to get some personal belongings (including her wallet and her daughter’s car seat) out of the car, Ehrich allegedly snapped the key off in the lock.
The argument continued inside as Ehrich packed. When the woman tried to get Ehrich’s key from him, he allegedly pushed her over and began punching her in the face and chest. The couple’s 13-month-old daughter was present during the fight, court records state, and she was knocked over at one point.
As Ehrich was leaving, court records state, the woman “begged” him to allow her to take her wallet and the car seat from the car. Ehrich allegedly hit her with a roundhouse punch to the side of her head before going to the vehicle.
The woman made a final attempt, chasing after the car and reaching inside to get her things when Ehrich stopped. As she was partially in the car, however, Ehrich allegedly started driving again, causing the woman to fall to the ground and scraping her sweat pants-covered knees along the ground for a brief distance. Before leaving the area, Ehrich threw the car seat onto the ground.
Police learned the alleged details of the incident from the woman. Another witness corroborated much of her testimony, records state.
