Burglars arrested in Ottertail

Three people suspected in multiple thefts and burglaries in Otter Tail County were arrested in Ottertail City on Sunday night.

Matthew Heaton, 42, of Sartell; Chad Kampa, 33, of Foley; and Stephanie Schmitt, 20, of Prior Lake, were located after they allegedly fled the scene of a burglary in progress near Rush Lake shortly before 10 p.m. They were found in Ottertail later in the evening.

The county sheriff’s office reported that when the three were stopped, they allegedly were in possession of items taken in two different burglaries, along with a trailer they had stolen from an Ottertail business. They were traveling in two different cars, both allegedly stolen (one from Perham, and one from St. Cloud).

In addition to the Rush Lake burglary, the three are believed to be involved with a burglary in rural Henning where items worth around $10,000 were stolen.

The sheriff’s office reported that county residents played a key role in helping law enforcement catch the alleged burglars.
