Library programs successful [UPDATED]
Published 9:45am Friday, April 13, 2012 Updated 11:47am Friday, April 13, 2012Wednesday marked the end of our 13-week spring storytime session at the library and what a wonderful session we had.
Starting in January, the library held four storytimes each week as well as the weekly Tot Cafe program. Our baby and toddler storytime is for children aged 0 to 2 while our preschool storytime is for children aged 3 to 6. These storytimes are filled with books, songs, rhymes, crafts, puppet shows and more.
Tot Cafe, our open playtime at the library program, is for children 0 to 6. All programs encourage early literacy skills, promote a love of learning and libraries, and are a great way for children (and caregivers) to interact with their peers.
Many families attend our storytimes on a regular basis and make it part of their weekly routine. For our spring session we held 65 storytime and Tot Cafe programs with a total of 1,482 people in attendance.
Over the course of this school year we held 130 of these programs with a grand total of 2,819 in attendance.
It is clear that we live in a community that values reading and its library.
While it is always sad when a storytime session ends, we are busy getting ready for our annual Summer Reading Program (SRP) at the library and there is a lot to look forward to. Our SRP runs from June 4-July 28 and storytime will be back for 8 weeks from June 5-July 25.
The theme for the children’s program is “Dream Big — Read!” In addition to our popular children’s program, we will also be offering a separate SRP for teens and adults: “Peace, Love, Read” — a 1960s-inspired theme to tie-in with the 1968 exhibit at the Otter Tail County Historical Society (coming in August).
Our spring programs may be winding down but we still have some fun events coming up.
Our final CrafterSchool will be on Monday, April 23, from 3:30 to 4 p.m. We’ll be celebrating the books of Eric Carle and making a Very Hungry Caterpillar craft.
This event is for children aged preschool — fifth grade and registration is required.
The much-anticipated “Fabulously Fantastic Fancy Nancy Mother’s Day Tea Party” is on Saturday, May 12, at either 9 or 11 a.m. Space is limited for this event and registration is required.
I would like to thank all of the families who come to the library. Interacting with our youngest of library customers is one of the best things about my job.
The children never fail to put a smile on my face and I get to laugh out loud … a lot.
On Wednesday, a four-year-old boy came up to me after storytime and told me, “It’s really fun here. You’re a good library teacher. You know a lot of good books.” And then he proceeded to ask me out on a lunch date to Burger King.
