Elbow Lake Mayor Jay McNamar was selected by the DFL to run against Republican candidate, Scott Dutcher for the Representative seat in District 12A at April 19 at the endorsing convention in Glenwood.

McNamar edged out fellow DFL member Tamy Reese of Morris by a 48 to 31 vote. Former State Representative Gene Wenstrom nominated McNamar due to his understanding of rural towns. Seconding the nomination was Minnesota Rural Education Senior Policy Analyst Vernae Hasbargen of Breckenridge and West Central Area teacher Rich Duncan.

McNamar’s campaign focused on not penalizing schools and the poor in pursuit of balancing the budget. He said due to poor fiscal management, the state has had to borrow millions from promised school aid, forcing schools to borrow in order to keep quality programs.

Also nominated was John Schultz of Browns Valley as the DFL’s choice for District 12 senate seat.

Schultz has over 10 years of experience working in major banks in New York City, before moving to Minnesota to start farming in the 70s.
