As the school year comes to the end, many students look forward to the summer and their eventual move into college. Underwood graduate Jasmine Richey will prepare for her next step as she joins the United States Marine Corps.

Richey does not look to take the easy route out of high school as she prepares to leave for basic training on July 9.

“I wanted to join the hardest branch of the military,” Richey said. “How many females can say that they joined the Marine Corps?”

Richey’s job in the Marines will be to work combat cameras, to shoot video and photos for commercials and billboards for Marine Corps.

After basic training, Richey said she hopes to be stationed in California so she can attend California University to study plastic surgery.

Asked what her favorite thing about going to Underwood High School, Richey said that it was that you could be in so many activities and you never had to worry about them overlapping. This has been great for her as she has been involved in volleyball, basketball, weightlifting, speech, drama, musicals and choir.

Richey said keeps busy outside of school working at Applebee’s in Fergus Falls and at Sew Perfect Bridal. She also volunteers her time at the Humane Society walking dogs.

Richey has always felt encouragement from her teachers and peers, but gave a special thanks to Underwood Principal John Hamann for encouraging her to never settle, but to excel in what she was attempting to do.

“Jasmine has one of the best personalities I have ever seen,” Hamann said. “She was just a pleasure to have in the hall.”

When Richey is not busy with the several extracurricular activities, she enjoys working out and hanging out with her friends.
