EL garbage pickup going to containers [UPDATED]

Published 9:40am Friday, May 18, 2012 Updated 11:41am Friday, May 18, 2012

Elbow Lake garbage customer will now be required to use hard plastic containers rather than yellow plastic bags, the Elbow Lake City Council decided Monday.

The change was made because there has been a recent increase in public interest, said Elbow Lake city clerk Jeff Holsen.

Containers will be less wasteful than the yellow bags because they can be reused while the yellow bags had to be thrown out every week.

Elbow Lake residents also liked the idea of switching to containers because many thought they will look nicer and be easier to use, Holsen said. Yellow bags had to be picked up and carried to the curb, but the new containers will have wheels, so they can be rolled instead.

Three different-sized containers will be available to the residents free of charge. Monthly garbage fees will be based on the container’s size. Yellow bags will still be available to purchase and use if containers overfill. It is not required to use yellow bags inside of containers.

Holsen said the change will not increase garbage pickup fees for most residents.

It should take around 30 days for West Central Sanitation to get the new containers onto the streets.
