Published 11:00am Friday, May 18, 2012 Updated 10:23am Friday, May 18, 2012ASHBY — Behind a stellar all-around performance by Alyssa Wolderich the Hillcrest softball team claimed their first ever Pheasant Conference Championship 9-4 over Ashby Thursday.
The Comets were able to take an early lead as they scored four runs in the second inning.
The Arrows were within striking distance going into the last inning, but Hillcrest closed the door with another four-run inning.
Wolderich finished the day picking up the win on the mound as she fanned 13 batters and went 3 for 4 with two RBI from the plate. Teammate Gracia Larson also collected two hits and had two RBI in the game.
“Alyssa has been solid all year and her pitching has kept us in many games,” Comets’ Coach Craig Nersten said. “She’s also gotten some great defensive play behind her from her teammates.”
Meg Roley had a hot bat for the Arrows collecting three of Ashby’s four hits in the game and had two runs batted in.
Ashby’s Paige Nelson pitched a great game with three Ks, but surrendered nine hits and four walks in the loss.
“Our bats were pretty quiet today but this happens when you run into tough pitching,” Arrows’ Coach Kandace Norby said. “My girls played good defense, especially the infield who got most of the action and made some outstanding plays.”
The Comets finish their regular season with a record of 10-2, while the Arrows will travel to take on Verndale Friday at 5 p.m.
