Jewels pampering Underwood residents

Underwood just got a bit more glamorous.

Two weeks ago, rural Battle Lake resident Julie Sydow opened Jewels Salon and Spa at 312 Frontage Ave. West in Underwood. Sydow chose the business location to provide a local place for residents to be pampered, rather than going to Fergus Falls or Battle Lake for their salon needs.

“The local people have expressed so much how happy they are to have something in town,” she said.

In addition to providing an Underwood salon/spa location, Sydow intends to be a one-stop shop for beauty needs. Her services include hair styling, manicures, pedicures, nail shellacking, facials, waxing, and more.

One service she’s particularly proud of is microdermabrasion – a service few salons in the county offer. Microdermabrasion is an exfoliation process that removes the outer layer of skin from a person’s face, leaving fresh-looking skin and lessening wrinkles.

Opening the salon with her husband Wayne is a dream come true for Sydow. A banking employee for more than 30 years, Sydow waited until her children had finished college before going back to school to pursue a long-hoped-for career in cosmetology.

“It was mom’s turn,” she said with a smile.

In spring 2011, Sydow won the state SkillsUSA competition in hair design and competed nationally in Kansas City, Mo. Her passion to be the best, she said, shows that she can style with the best of them and shows that you can still be an up and comer in middle age.

“I competed with a lot of young girls,” she said.

The salon is named Jewels after a common nickname for Sydow, but she has taken the name and used it as a basis for a glitzy and glamorous décor, from a crown motif to a display of fashionable gifts to an eye-catching bar enameled with hundreds of pennies (just how many Sydow won’t say until her soon-to-be-scheduled open house). Most of all, Sydow wants to create a comfortable atmosphere that allows clients to be served in the way that works best for them. Whether those clients are from Underwood or a neighboring town – Sydow has already gotten several visits from Battle Lake, Dalton, Ashby and Fergus Falls – she aims to please.

“I like to have the atmosphere of relaxation and not just an in-out place,” she said. “I want people to come in and be pampered.”
