Area communities holding annual Memorial Day services [UPDATED]

Memorial day is on Monday, and many area communities are observing this special day of rememberance with services, programs and events.

The following is a schedule of area Memorial Day events.

• Perham will hold a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. at the Prairie Wind Middle School. Perham American Legion Post 61, Ladies Auxiliary and VFW Post 4020 will host the event. Prior to the service there will be an all-you-can-eat waffle and sausage breakfast at 7 a.m., and following the service will be the dedication ceremony for the new Perham Veterans Memorial at the Perham Village Cemetery.

• A Rothsay Memorial Day service will be held at 10 a.m. at the Rothsay Community Center. The service will be put on by Rothsay American Legion Post 376 and the American Legion Auxiliary. Former member of the Army’s Old Guard and Rothsay school principle Jamie Goebel will speak at the event.

• The Herman-Norcross community Memorial Day service will take place at the community school. The event will be sponsored by American Legion Post 378, and the Memorial Day address will be given by pastor Weston Moir, a retired naval commander.

• The Ashby Memorial Day service, sponsored by American Legion Post 357 and Auxiliary, will be held at the school auditorium at 9:45 a.m. Giving the address will be Walter A. Hiskett, Captain, Chaplain Corps, United States Navy Retiree. After the indoor service, everyone will walk down the street to the Veterans’ Memorial at 11:15 a.m. First grade students will place crosses, wreaths and flags in the park.

• Wendell will have its community Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. in Wendell Hall, sponsored by American Legion Post 426 and Auxiliary. Following the indoor service, residents are encouraged to continue in a parade to Memorial Park. A potluck dinner will follow the ceremony. Plates and utensils will not be provided.

• Kensington, Elbow Lake, Hoffman and Barrett will observe Memorial Day together. The service will be at the West Central Area School at 10:30 a.m. American Legion posts 351, 268, 321 and 393 will sponsor the event.

• Underwood will host a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. in the Underwood School gymnasium. The event will be sponsored by George Bergem Post 489 American Legion.

• Battle Lake will observe a Memorial Day service in the Battle Lake School gymnasium at 11 a.m. The address will be given by James Kent, a retired United States Air Force Colonel. A luncheon, hosted by the Battle Lake American Legion Auxiliary will follow at the Senior Center.

• Leaf Mountain Church on County Hwy. 6, one mile easy of Hwy. 5, will host its annual Mountain Men Memorial Day Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The award winning Mountain Men baked beans will be on the menu along with plenty of other great food selections. Proceeds will be given to food shelves in Battle Lake, Henning and Parkers Prairie.

• The Minnesota Veterans Home of Fergus Falls will host a program by the flag pole in front of the building at 2 p.m. Speaking at the program will be Walter A. Hiskett, Captain, Chaplain Corps, United States Navy retiree. Visitors are encouraged to join in the ceremonial walk to the Memorial Wall. Ice cream will be served after the program.

• The Fergus Falls VFW, American Legion Post 30 and Veterans Council will put on a Memorial Day ceremony in Fergus Falls beginning at 10 a.m. in Veterans Park. At 11 a.m. the ceremony will move to Oak Grove Cemetery. All services will move into the VFW in case of rain.
