Undefeated Eagles end Comets season
Published 10:53am Wednesday, May 30, 2012The Hillcrest Comets saw pitcher Zach Nersten throw a great game, but the undefeated New York Mills Eagles landed key hits to pick up a 2-0 win in the Section 6A playoffs Tuesday.
The Comets opened the day with a 3-2 10 inning win over Nevis.
Hillcrest came out of the gate ready to play taking an early 2-0 lead. The Tigers pick up a run in the third and saw a clutch hit by Spencer Stack to score the tying run in the bottom of the seventh.
After a back and forth battle, the Comets were able to sneak Quincy Undseth across the plate off a Nick Castro grounder in the top of the 10th.
The Comets did not seem to let fatigue set in going into their game with New York Mills.
Nersten was able to keep New York Mills hitters off balance most of the afternoon.
The Eagles were able to plate a run in both the third and fourth inning, giving them enough to knock the Comets out of the playoffs.
Nersten went the distance allowing only four hits and two walks, but was outdueled by the Eagles Tyler Patron, who struckout 13 batters and gave up four hits in the win.
“I am so proud of Zach’s performance in the last game of his high school career,” Comets’ Coach Steve Undseth said. “He went 3 for 3 at the plate, and virtually shut down a very good hitting team.”
The Comets end their season with a 4-11 record.
