Seaplane base closer to reality in EL
Published 1:04pm Friday, June 1, 2012Flekkefjord Lake is one step away from becoming a licensed public seaplane base after Governer Dayton signed the Transportation Omnibus bill last week.
Because of a provision within the bill, the commissioner of Transportation will grant a variance for the Pride of the Prairie airport to be licensed as a public seaplane base on Elbow Lake’s Flekkefjord Lake.
The final step is licensing. Before a license can be awarded, the site must be inspected.
If a Flekkefjord Lake is awarded a license, it can be listed on state aviation maps and advertised as a float plane landing strip.
It is unknown how long the licensing process will take, but airport manager Joe LaRue said he hopes to have it licensed by November so Flekkefjord Lake can be put on next year’s aviation maps.
