Vikings Haugrud qualifies for 3 events

MOORHEAD — Pelican Rapids’ Sommer Haugrud qualified for state in three events at the Section 6A track and field meet Thursday.

Haugrud picked up a win in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.72, finished second in the 200 meter dash (25.81) and took third in the 400 meter run (1:00.04).

Haugrud’s team shared a piece of the Section championship tying with Morris Area at the meet.

Teammates Anna Skow-Anderson (long jump) and Alexis Marty (pole vault) also qualified for the state meet.

Ashby/Brandon-Evansville’s track team took fourth in the meet, but will be sending four individuals to the state meet.

Thrower Heather Strese walked away with a gold medal in the shot put with a throw of 39’9. Megan Friedrich placed 2nd in the 100 meter hurdles, while teammate Caroline Jansen had a personal best in the long jump at 16’7, enough to take home a silver medal, and Toby Wach also had a personal best in the discus with a throw of 150’1.

West Central will also be represented at the state meet as Kylee Fernholz took second in the 800 meter run and the team of Fernholz, Abby VanKempen, Jennifer Froemming and Abby Peterson finished second in the 4×800 meter relay.

Otter Tail Central will send Megan Beigler (discus) and Steph Wold (high jump) to the state meet.

The Class A state meet will be held at Hamline University in St. Paul on June 8-9.
