CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. — The M State Spartan Men’s golf team sits a stroke back after the first round of play at the NJCAA Division III National tournament Monday.

Louisberg College of North Carolina is at top of the leader board shooting a 314 team score. M State – Fergus Falls followed in second (315) and Jamestown CC of New York was in third.

“We played a very solid first round. Having such a long layoff with our last tournament being in October was a concern, but the guys played well,” Spartans’ Coach Jason Retzlaff said. “The first round is a good one to get out of the way to get rid of some butterflies.”

The Spartans’ Taylor Shuck shot an opening round 74 to put him tied for fourth in the tournament, while teammate Lucas Gervais’ 78 placed him tied for 13th.

The tournament is a four day event concluding on Thursday.
