1950s-themed At The Hop in the former Angler Inn

The Ottertail area is always a hopping place in the summer, and one newly opened restaurant is giving guests a taste of the 1950s with homemade pie, ice cream and several specialty burgers.

At The Hop Diner opened in May, and it has already become a favorite for some locals.

“The customers are glad to see it open,” owner Marlys Stahlecker said. “The building has been closed for five years, and I thought it was a great location.”

At the Hop is located on the north side of Ottertail at the intersection of County Hwy. 1 and Minn. State Hwy. 78. The restaurant was formerly the Angler Inn.

Stahlecker has lived in the area for around 20 years and was involved with a 50s-themed concession trailer before she opened At the Hop Diner.

“I wanted something without wheels, and Ottertail is a great place,” she said.

Waitress Chris Scander said the staff loves working for Stahlecker.

“She isn’t the boss that just tells you to do something,” Scander said. “She’s always right there working with us.”

At The Hop will feature Classic Car Cruise nights on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month from May through September. All are welcome to take their classics out to At The Hop where waitresses will serve food in the parking lot. Menu specials will be available for anyone who brings a classic car to Cruise Night.

“The Classic Car nights will match the 1950s feel,” Stahlecker said. “It’s just a fun theme. People seem to love it.”

Some of the At The Hop specialty burgers include the Jack Stack, Jucy Lucy and Blue Onion Burger. Guests can also enjoy a salad bar and outdoor deck for nice days, Stahlecker said.

Stahlecker said she plans to make At The Hop a seasonal restaurant. From May through October, the restaurant will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
