Memorial put on hold in EL

While many in Grant County hoped for a decision by the county board on Tuesday afternoon, it now appears that the Veterans Memorial will need to wait another year.

The location of the memorial has been a topic of much controversy over the past several weeks, but now, both proposed locations have been called into question for fear that the courthouse might lose its status as a recognized historical site if the memorial is built anywhere on its grounds, said commissioner Tom Amundson.

The county has taken steps to find out if a memorial would change the status of the courthouse site, but the board will not know for another several months. Construction will not be able to begin until next spring at the earliest, he said.

The courthouse is recognized on the state of Minnesota historical registry, and the building has received around $100,000 in grants because of its status. The board doesn’t want to make a decision to build the memorial on courthouse grounds until it is sure the building’s historical status will not be jeopardized, Amundson said.
