Underwood street may become a school zone [UPDATED]

The possibility of establishing a school zone on Southern Avenue in Underwood was discussed at a public meeting Wednesday night.

“We’ve been working for quite a while on establishing a school zone,” superintendent Jeremiah Olson said. “With County Highway 122, people are coming in at 55 (MPH) and have to slow down to 30 (MPH). It’s not very safe for kids crossing.”

The school board contracted with engineering firm SRF to conduct a study on the area in order to make school zone safety recommendations, Olson said.

Members of the school board, city council and community attended the meeting to discuss recommendations and options in moving forward. No decisions were made, but a committee was established to help develop options and ideas to present to the school board in future meetings. The committee is made up of two city council members, two school board and one community member, said Olson.
