Jon Pontius, one of four individuals to be inducted into the Fergus Falls Area Chamber of Commerce Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, June 30, will always be remembered as a star Otter athlete and track standout in the early 1990s.

The son of Mark and Cathie Helland, Jon earned his first letter in eighth grade as a high jumper. As a sophomore, he placed third in the state in the triple jump. In his junior year he was second in the high and triple jumps and as a senior he was the state champion in the high, long, and triple jumps.

His high jump mark of 7-feet and one-half inch remains one of the best all-time in the state.

After high school, Pontius broke the records in the high jump, the decathlon, and the pentathlon at West Point. He became an NCAA Division I All-American in the decathlon in 1997.

Pontius was a two-event All-Armed Forces selection in track and field in 1998 and 2000 and was a five-event champion in the International Police and Fire Games in 2004.

He continues to participate in sports and pursue fun and challenging activities.

Pontius will be inducted into the Chamber Sports Hall of Fame at 4 p.m. June 30 at the American Legion in Fergus Falls, along with Carleen Rose, Len Kretchmann and Mike Hilley. An open house for the general public will be held from 3 to 5 p.m.
