FF’s Lausch, area golfers finish state meet in middle of pack

JORDAN – After the two day tournament, Fergus Falls’ Keaton Lausch finished in the middle of the pack at Ridges at Sand Creek in the Class AA state championship Wednesday.

Lausch finished the tournament with a total of 156 after shooting a 79 in the second day of the tournament. The Fergus Falls sophomore started the day five over par after

“We as coaches were really pleased with Keaton’s scores,” Otters’ Coach Ben Jurgens said. “When you shoot two rounds in the 70s in your first state tournament experience, you are playing good golf.”

Detroit Lakes won the team tourney with a 601 team score, edging out runner-up Hermantown by a stroke. Hermantown’s Taylor Sundbom came back from six strokes down to shoot a 142 and put first day leader Karter Smith of Detroit Lakes in second place.

In boys’ Class A state action at Pebble Creek in Becker, West Central’s Matt Wagner finished the tournament tied for 14th after shooting a 78 for a two day total of 160. Kaleb Thalmann of Otter Tail Central finished the tournament with a168 total after a second round 90.

Perham’s Rachel Nelson and Pelican Rapids’ Alexa Bekkerus each were able to improve form their first round in the girls Class AA state tournament in Jordan. Nelson tied for 36th with a 177 (91, 86) two day total, while Bekkerus shot a 181 (92, 89) for a 43rd place finish.

Eighth-grader Kate Smith of Detroit Lakes claimed the state individual title as her second day 70 capped off an amazing 140 two day total. Smith’s team also laid claim to the team title shooting a 619 team score, 35 strokes ahead of runner-up Minnewaska.
