Running Wild in Maplewood

Published 10:24am Friday, June 22, 2012

Uneven ground, mini-hills, a gravel road and a trail surrounded by woods.

This may seem like an outdoor enthusiast’s dream vacation destination, but for runners, it offers a unique challenge that differs from normal courses.

Maplewood State Park, in Pelican Rapids, will play host to the Inaugural Running Wild trail run Saturday.

The festivities begin at 7 a.m. with registration and check-in with the kid’s run wild 200 yard dash beginning at 9 a.m. A nature and range presentation will follow, with the 7K race beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the one mile run/hike starting at 9:35 a.m., with both races beginning at the Josh Hanson Memorial Picnic Shelter.

The event concludes at 11 a.m. with an awards presentation. Awards will be presented to the top overall male and female finishers in the 7K and one mile race, and awards for age groups will also be presented.

Runners in the 7K race will be given a unique finisher medal for participating in the event.

The race currently has more than 170 runners in the 7K and 70 runners in the one mile race.

There will also be a raffle for a $250 gift card from Central Lakes Cycle.

All the proceeds for the event go to the Health Resources Center in Fergus Falls.

Runners can still participate in the trail run, if not already registered. The cost for the 7K race is $45, while the one mile run is $25.
