County Board OKs CD center drainage system repairs [UPDATED]Published 7:47am Wednesday, July 18, 2012 Updated 11:49am Wednesday, July 18, 2012
Groundwater drainage issues have caused frost heaving that has forced up fence posts, sidewalks and stoops at the chemical dependency treatment facility on Western Avenue near the post office in Fergus Falls, and action will soon be taken to repair damages and improve the drainage system.
Project engineer Jon Pauna provided an update to the county board on Tuesday and outlined a possible solution. The project will be put out for bids in the next week or two, and Pauna said he hopes it can be completed this fall.
In discussion, the commissioners agreed that this is the necessary action to take but expressed concern about the extra cost it would require to get the project done on such short notice. The affected structures would have to go through another freeze-thaw cycle if action is not taken this year, but the cost would likely be significantly less if work is pushed to next spring.
Once construction begins, the project will take about two months to complete. Allowing extra time for the project will help get a more favorable bid, and the board is more concerned with the price and quality of work than timeliness, Pauna said.
