It’s the summer of the sixties [UPDATED]Published 7:37am Wednesday, July 18, 2012 Updated 11:38am Wednesday, July 18, 2012
Remember go-go boots, tie-dye, 34 cent gas and the political turmoil of the late 1960s?servants
Or maybe you aren’t old enough to have lived it but have heard about this revolutionary time period in our nation’s history from your parents or grandparents.
Well, I am pleased to announce that we’re bringing the 60s back to Fergus Falls this summer!
This summer the Center for the Arts, Fergus Falls Public Library, Minnesota State Historical Society, Otter Tail County Historical Society and the Viking Library System are working together to bring three exciting 1960s themed events to our fair city.
The library has been celebrating the 60’s all summer long with our “Peace, Love, Read” Program for adults and teens, and on Wednesday, July 25 the library invites you to enjoy an educational lecture from Brian Horrigan, creator of the 1968 Exhibit displayed at the Minnesota Historical Society this past spring. Have you ever wondered how museums gather all of the artifacts needed for exhibits or how they re-create scenes from history?
Then, this lecture is for you. Brian will also discuss the events that made 1968 an unforgettable year.
Brian Horrigan’s visit is the prelude to the arrival of the Traveling 1968 Exhibit coming to Fergus Falls in August. Fergus Falls is one of just three cities in Minnesota to have the honor of hosting this Exhibit.
Opening Night is planned from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, at the Otter Tail County Historical Museum (110 Lincoln Ave W., Fergus Falls). Attendance on Opening Night is free and refreshments will be served.
Plus, a local component created by area teens will be incorporated into the Exhibit.
During early August, members of the library’s teen advisory group, the NINJAS, will be interviewing area residents who were teenagers living in Otter Tail County during the 1960s.
The teens will then use the information gathered from these interviews to create posters that will be displayed as a part of the 1968 Traveling Exhibit. How groovy is that?
The 1968 Exhibit will remain on display at the Otter Tail County Historical Museum through October 12, but regular admission will be charged to visit the Exhibit after Aug. 9.
Finally, we will wrap-up our 1968 events with a special 1960s-themed show at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at A Center for the Arts, 124 W. Lincoln Ave.
We invite you to “Tiptoe through the 60s” with award-winning Minneosota-based musicians and storytellers Prudence Johnson and Dan Chouinard. This is a free show and promises to be a “gas.”
I hope to see you at these fab, fun and free 1960s themed events. Each of the events are programs of the Minnesota Historical Society, presented by the Minnesota Regional Library Systems and made possible by the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment.
Erin Smith is the director of the Fergus Falls Public Library.
