Summer is in full swing as the 75th Henning area Festival gets underway this Friday at 5 p.m.

Kicking off the festival is the church food stand and a Henning Giants baseball game, which pits past Giant players with the Henning team of this year in a friendly match beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday is a full schedule of activites and events for the entire family, including an 8 a.m. softball tournament and the annual Bob Polzine Walk/Run at the football field.

Registration for the Bob Polzine Walk/Run begins at 7 a.m.

Later in the day is the popular Demolition Derby at the festival grounds at 6:30 p.m.

The derby has been known to attract up to 1,000 visitors and is one of the more popular events at the Henning festival.

Despite this large turnout, the Henning festival remains a traditional small-town day of fun.

“People like the small town festivals,” said Mason Thalmann, who takes part in organizing the festival. “There is a personal touch to everything we do. It’s run by the local people and local businesses. It has that hometown touch.”

Ending the Saturday festivities is the opening of the beer garden on the festival grounds at 8 p.m., followed by the street dance on the festival grounds which begins at 9 p.m. and runs into the early hour of 1 a.m.

The street dance will have a DJ this year instead of a live band.

The always-popular fireworks are at the festival this year too, starting at 10 p.m. at the festival grounds.

The Henning festival ends on Sunday with the Henning Giants taking on Wadena Deer Creek in a baseball game on the Henning baseball field at 1 p.m.

Prior to the baseball game on the final day of the festival is a 7 to 11 a.m. breakfast provided by the Lions club at the festival food stand where everyone is welcome.
