Minn. court weighs edited ballot question titles [UPDATED]

ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Supreme Court hears arguments Tuesday in separate lawsuits over the rewriting of ballot titles for two proposed constitutional amendments.

Backers of the amendments on marriage and voter identification sued Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, the state’s top election administrator, after he changed the titles that will appear above the questions on the November ballot.

Amendment supporters say the Democratic secretary of state is trying to sway voters in an improper overreach of his authority.

Ritchie contends a law dating back to 1919 requires him to provide titles for ballot questions.

Minn. settles suit over hospital debt collections

ST. PAUL — Attorney General Lori Swanson announced a legal settlement Monday that will bar a Chicago medical revenue company from doing business in Minnesota for six years after she accused Accretive Health Inc. of intrusive efforts to collect money from patients in several hospitals.

The settlement requires Accretive to stop operations in Minnesota by November. Accretive will be banned for two years outright and another four years after that unless the attorney general
