FF girls post 2-2 record at ‘Sweet 16′ tourney

JOSEPH — The Fergus Falls girls basketball team competed at the Pacesetter Sweet Sixteen summer tournament held at St. Benedict’s College in St. Joseph over the weekend. Many of the top teams in the state from last season were invited, including several teams who competed in the state tournament at all class levels. Fergus Falls was invited based on their state tournament appearance and 3rd place finish last season.
Fergus Falls met Class 4A Eastview from the Twin Cities in the first round. Eastview defense forced 27 turnovers on their way to a 63-52 win over the Otters.
Hanna Swenson led the Fergus shooters with 15 points and six rebounds, while newcomer guard Bailey Strand netted 14 points.
Moving into the consolation round, Fergus Falls was able to breeze past Isle for a 75-61 victory.
Strand continued her momentum into the second game as she finished with 28 points, 12 from beyond the arch, and four steals. Swenson finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Kristin Traiser came off the bench to net 10 points.
The Otters defeated a Twin Cities All-Star team 65-47 in their third game of the tourney.
The Otters were able to jump to to an early lead and never look back.
Strand led the Otters with 16 points, followed by Brianna Rasmusson and Anna Monke with nine.
The Otters were excellent from the charity stripe as they hit 17 of 21 free throws.
This setup a consolation final game against Chaska.
Chaska’s size and depth was able to keep the Otters at bay as they took a 65-54 loss.
The Otters held a narrow lead at half, but shot only 30 percent from the field.
Rasmusson led the Otters with 19 points, six rebounds and five steals, while teammate Swenson recorded her second double-double with 15 points and 11 boards.
