Run-away van runs over boy’s arm

A 7-year-old boy was treated at Lake Region Hospital Tuesday afternoon after he accidentally caused a minivan to run over his own arm.

The boy and possibly some other children were left alone in a running Pontiac Montana at the Big Chief Cafe parking lot on the edge of Fergus Falls around 4:15 p.m., the county sheriff’s office reported. The adults in the van were assisting another child in the restroom.

While the adults were inside, the 7-year-old reportedly got into the driver’s seat and put the van in reverse. He tried to exit the van as it was rolling backward, but he was knocked down and the van ran over his arm before running into an unoccupied pickup truck also parked in the lot.

The boy was taken to the hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown, but the sheriff’s office said they don’t appear to be life-threatening.

There won’t likely be charges. The sheriff’s office did not report a hometown for the van’s occupants but noted that the van had Canada license plates.
