Still some academic work to do [UPDATED]

It was good to see that the Fergus Falls School District significantly improved its overall math scores for the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment Test, and stayed above the statewide average in reading.

But the results also showed the district has work to do.

While test scores at all but the online-based IQ Academy improved, the district, which had 59.5 percent of students test out at a “proficient” level in math or higher, is still below the statewide average of 62.1 percent.

For two Fergus Falls schools in particular, the Area Learning Center (8.3 percent) and IQ Academy (10.6 percent), there is much work to be done.

While academics are often a challenge for many students in these two schools, it is important they not be left behind.

As Fergus Falls students graduate and enter the job market, math and reading will be critical skills throughout their lives.

While we congratulate the Fergus Falls School District for improvement, we hope the improvement is just a start.
