Trying a new thing can be difficult for anyone.
Whether that be starting a new job, moving to a new city or getting into physical activity. For Heather Lewis, the transition to training for a 5K has not only been a fun experience, but a rewarding one.
Lewis started her training as a promise to her father. “I never thought that I could, but I can. I was not in shape at all and I’ve been able to work with the program without getting discouraged,” Lewis added.
She attends Tuesday sessions at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday sessions at 10:30 a.m. with Dr. Wes Borowski. Lewis also runs once a week on her own. Her training involves an alternating walk to jog with the jog time increasing and the walk time decreasing.
“I like the feeling of progress and accomplishment. I thought I was going to die each time we increased the jog time, but I’ve done it and felt good and like I could keep going at the end of each run.”
Lewis’ goals are obtainable as she works towards the Spartan 5K. “I just want finish the Spartan 5K in September without stopping to walk. I’ll be satisfied with finishing.” In the future, Lewis will look to run in the Warrior Dash, a promise she made to a friend in Seattle.
If you are starting out from scratch or just trying to ease yourself back into physical activity, Lewis recommends joining the Couch to 5K training program.
“Its never too late to start. I encourage anyone and everyone to join a group, there is a wide spread of people and there’s no shame in working at your own pace.”
