A 34-year-old Pelican Rapids man was charged Tuesday in Otter Tail County court after he allegedly assaulted his wife while his children were present.

Jeffrey David Peterson faces one count of felony domestic assault by strangulation and two misdemeanor counts of domestic assault. Court records report that Peterson’s children witnessed the assault and called 911 to report his alleged crime.

The alleged assault happened in the 1 a.m. hour on Aug. 12. Records state that Peterson and his family were at a small farm home on County Highway 4. Peterson allegedly got into an argument with his wife after he had been drinking at a wedding dance. During the argument, he allegedly threw a book at his wife.

The argument culminated when he allegedly pushed his wife to the floor and held her down by her neck, cutting off her air flow. Two of the couple’s children reportedly saw this part of the argument, and one called 911.
