It’s been more than two months since Ottertail resident Scott Burris’ body was found floating in the Otter Tail River and more than a month since local law enforcement executed a search warrant related to the case on a Fergus Falls home (possibly belonging to one of Burris’ relatives). However, the public knows little more about the circumstances surrounding the 33-year-old’s mysterious death than it did on June 15.

What the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office knows is uncertain.

Since Burris’ body was recovered, the sheriff’s office has not released his cause of death, autopsy results, the reasons behind his death or whether there are any suspects in the case. Burris’ friends and family have either refused to talk or admitted to being in the dark.

The last time the sheriff’s office went on record with The Journal about the case was on July 11, the day after the search warrant on North Oak Street. At the time, the sheriff’s office did not say if any progress was made in the case or if any evidence was found in the home. At last check, the details of the search warrant have not shown up in court. It is possible for law enforcement to withhold search warrant details related to ongoing investigations.

Since July 11, The Journal has requested comment from the sheriff’s office, as well as from others thought to be close to the case. All requests have been declined.
