Welcome to town, Shopko [UPDATED]

For those of us whose memory of Pamida goes back at least as far as when it was located at Pebble Lake Road and Highway 210 on the southeast side of town, it was perhaps with a bit of melancholy that we learned the discount store was becoming a Shopko. As consumers seeking variety, however, we look forward to the new look and new shopping opportunity.

Many remember when Pamida was next door to another long-closed former giant, Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store.

It perhaps goes without saying that often change is in our best interests in the long run — as hindsight frequently shows — regardless of how much of a fight we put up to accept the change.

In this case, however, the change to Shopko Hometown should be viewed as a positive and no one should be hauled kicking and screaming, metaphorically speaking, into the new store with new merchandise.

The chain has a solid reputation of competitive pricing and customer service, so aside from the name, there should be little difference in quality or prices for most of us.

We welcome Shopko to town, but forgive us if it that welcome carries with it some of nostalgia for Pamida.
