MOORHEAD — With the heat catching up to several runners late, the Fergus Falls Otters and the Perham Yellowjackets opened their season at the ‘Shocky’ Strand Invitational Monday.

In boys action, the Bemidji Lumberjacks were able to pick up the win scoring a 46 with Perham close behind finding three runners in the top 10 for a score of 53.

Perham’s Keeghan Hurley took top honors at the invite with a time of 16:41. The Otters were led by Connor Danielson, who finished in 10th place with a time of 17:16.

“From what we have seen in practice so far we are going to have 7 guys that have the potential to run with the top individuals in the state,” Perham coach Jeff Morris said. “We definitely were hoping to get the win today, but will for sure use this race as motivation to train that much harder ever day.”

The Willmar Cardinals were able to edge the hosting Spuds as they scored a 29 team score to Moorhead’s 39. The Perham girls finished in third with a 85, while the Fergus Falls girls finished in seventh with a 168 team score.

The Yellowjackets saw Brynnan Covington lead the team with a 12th place finish (16:40), while the Fergus girls were led by Cierra Larson (18:07.50) for a 31st place finish.

“Our Varsity girls all ran within seconds of each other,” Otters coach Niki Welde said. “We like to see that in a team. When they pack run like that, they help each other and draw a great race.”

The Otters next race will be at Bemidji on Sept. 7 at 4:30 p.m., while the Yellowjackets will travel to Wadena to compete in a meet on Sept. 4.
